It’s worth cruising 3hrs north of St. Gilles to visit Tarascan, rich in history and home to one of the most beautiful fortresses in Europe. The main attractions of the Camargue lay to the south of the base. The walled city of Aigues-Mortes (3hrs south of St. Gilles) is not to be missed, as well as the plethora of lively beach resorts, Gardian cowboy ranches and opportunities to see the famous pink flamingos and white Camargue horses. We’d also recommend a trip to Nîmes from St. Gilles (23km by road). It has a Roman arena and a walking tour of the city is an excellent way to absorb its fascinating history.

Homps is at the very heart of the Midi. It’s a great base if you wish to travel far and see lots – with loads of villages and attractions and very few locks to the east. You can branch off towards the Canal de la Robine and the Roman city of Narbonne (7hrs from Homps), or continue to the Fonserannes staircase of seven locks and lively Béziers (5-6hrs away). Historic Carcassonne is a quiet and peaceful 10hr cruise to the west. You can’t leave Homps without travelling 12km inland to the beautiful town of Minerve, perched high on a rocky promontory surrounded by deep gorges – spectacular!

Directions

From the M25, exit at Junction 11 and take the route that is signposted A320 Woking at the end of the dual carriageway. Turn right at the roundabout, which is signposted A320 Chertsey/Staines. As an extra guide you can follow the brown signs for Thorpe Park. Continue to follow the signs A320/Thorpe Park. This will take you through Chertsey and onto a dual carriageway with the Twynersh Pub on your left. Continue on the dual carriageway, going over the M3. This brings you to another roundabout. Thorpe Park is on your left. At this roundabout, go straight over onto Staines Road at take the second entrance on the right which is Gate 5. Once through the gate, continue 45m straight ahead and then take the road on your right. Follow this until you reach a large building with the curved roof and turn left immediately after it. Keep going until you see the Emerald Star reception building. Closest train station:

Directions

The Benson base is situated on the A4074 between Oxford and Reading. From London take the M40 and head west, exiting at junction 7. Turn left onto the A329 and follow signs towards Wallingford. Stay on the A329, passing through Little Milton, Stadhampton, Newington and Warborough. At Shillingford, turn left at the roundabout onto the A4074 towards Reading. Follow this road for 0.9miles until you reach another roundabout (you’ll see a McDonalds and a BP garage ahead of you). Go straight over and continue for another 0.4miles. The entrance to the base is on the right hand side, look out for the sign that says ‘WATERFRONT’.

Directions

The Benson base is situated on the A4074 between Oxford and Reading. From London take the M40 and head west, exiting at junction 7. Turn left onto the A329 and follow signs towards Wallingford. Stay on the A329, passing through Little Milton, Stadhampton, Newington and Warborough. At Shillingford, turn left at the roundabout onto the A4074 towards Reading. Follow this road for 0.9miles until you reach another roundabout (you’ll see a McDonalds and a BP garage ahead of you). Go straight over and continue for another 0.4miles. The entrance to the base is on the right hand side, look out for the sign that says ‘WATERFRONT’.

Our Chertsey base is not far from central London, so the river here is bordered by bustling towns and villages with a wider variety of restaurants, supermarkets and pubs than there is near Benson. The historic and grand royal palace at Hampton Court is just 3hrs to the east, with Kingston (and direct trains into central London) another 30minutes after that. 3hr west from our Chertsey base will find you in Windsor and Eton and the countryside vistas become more and more beautiful the further you travel.

Directions

From the M25, exit at Junction 11 and take the route that is signposted A320 Woking at the end of the dual carriageway. Turn right at the roundabout, which is signposted A320 Chertsey/Staines. As an extra guide you can follow the brown signs for Thorpe Park. Continue to follow the signs A320/Thorpe Park. This will take you through Chertsey and onto a dual carriageway with the Twynersh Pub on your left. Continue on the dual carriageway, going over the M3. This brings you to another roundabout. Thorpe Park is on your left. At this roundabout, go straight over onto Staines Road at take the second entrance on the right which is Gate 5. Once through the gate, continue 45m straight ahead and then take the road on your right. Follow this until you reach a large building with the curved roof and turn left immediately after it. Keep going until you see the Emerald Star reception building. Closest train station:
    • Staines: 4km
